The Football Game pt.1

The Team

Almost every day of the summer, my brothers and I would play a game of tackle football out in the front yard. Not against any of the neighbors, or kids from down the street, and not even friends of the family and their kids, but just us three and the long, narrow yard strangely resembling a small versioned football field.

We had enough players. I was the quarterback, John was my only receiver, and Aaron was also my only receiver. They would take turns trying to score against each other.

There were no field goals, no referees, touchdowns counted as a point, and any close calls were decided by a do over.

We'd play to ten points-unless we got cut off by an unexpected trip to the bread store, or lost track of time and forgot about baseball practice, in which case we'd go to five-perfectly fine with just one game a day. We didn't want to play too many and wear the fun out.

The person who got the ball first, had to win by two.
